What is Causing Down Fall of Rupee?

Reasons why the rupee hit record low against the dollar

1. Fundamental law of economics
If the demand for the dollar in India is more than its supply, the dollar appreciates and the rupee depreciates. Demand for dollars may be created by importers requiring more dollars to pay for their imports or by Foreign Institutional Investors (FII’s) withdrawing their investments and taking the dollars outside India, thus creating a shortage of dollar supply, which, in turn, can also increase the demand for the dollar.

Similarly, when the supply of dollars in India increases with respect to its demand, the value of the dollar decreases in terms of rupees. Supply can be created by exporters bringing in more dollars from their revenues or FIIs bringing more dollars in India to spur their investments.

2. Price of crude
The price of crude puts tremendous stress on the Indian Rupee. India has to import a bulk of her oil requirements to satisfy local demand, which is rising year-on-year. Globally, the price of oil is quoted in dollars. Therefore, as the domestic demand for oil increases or the price of oil increases in the international market, the demand for dollars also increases to pay our suppliers from whom we import oil. This increase in demand for the dollar (see earlier point) weakens the rupee further.

3.Rising Import bill
Rising import bill (arising out of gold) is also a major factor that has curtailed government’s effort to tackle the fall of rupee. Gold contributes to over 10 percent of the total import bill. Gold imports were 141 tonnes in April and rose to 162 tonnes in May. Due to certain government measures gold imports declined significantly to 31 tonnes in June but could not be held for the month of July. For the first 25 days of July, the imports stood at 45 tonnes.

4.Insufficient FDI inflows
Despite all the decisions to allow major reforms in India, the government has failed to tap major FDI inflow in the country. Instead, India has witnessed withdrawal of major projects by global giants like ArcelorMittal and Posco. Posco pulled out of its Rs 30,000 crore steel plant project in Karnataka followed by ArcelorMittal that scrapped its USD 12 billion (Rs 50,000 crore) steel plant project which it was planning to set up in Odisha. Inordinate delays, land acquisition problems, government clearance delays, lack of promptness have all contributed to the withdrawal of major companies. Last year Indian companies spent more overseas than Foreign Investors in India.

5. Current Account Deficit
A current account deficit occurs when a country’s total import exceeds the total exports. This makes the country, a net debtor to the rest of the world. This is not good for the country because, the country needs to buy more foreign currency. More demand for the foreign currency will cut the value of that country’s currency. India’s current account deficit now is more than the projected level and this also contributes to the depreciation of the Indian rupee.

6. Dollar gaining strength against the other currencies
The central banks of Eurozone and Japan are printing excessive money due to which their currency is devalued. On the other hand, the US Federal Reserve has shown signs to end their stimulus making the dollar stronger against the other currencies including the Indian rupee, at least in the short term.
In the year to date US dollar index strengthened by 1.91 percent. The strengthening of dollar is beyond government’s control which is ultimately hammering the Indian currency. Gradual recovery in US economy coupled with rising expectations that Federal Reserve will withdraw its stimulus package soon is underpinning the US dollar index.

7. Political paralysis A major reason for Rupee Depreciation
The parliament is unable to transact any meaningful business and reforms occupy a back seat. Coalition politics make things difficult for the government to push the much-needed reforms in many sectors. This is creating panic among overseas investors who want to invest in India.

8. Volatile equity market
Our equity market has been volatile for some time now. So, the FII’s are in a dilemma whether to invest in India or not. Even though they have brought in record inflows to the country in this year, if they pull out, it will result in a decrease of inflow of dollars into the country. Therefore, the decrease in supply and increase in demand of dollars results in the weakening of the rupee against the dollar.

The widening current account deficit and the depreciating rupee are definitely cause for concern. A weaker rupee further erodes the returns earned by the foreign investors in the Indian market. FIIs have turned net sellers of debt securities here for the first time in 13 months. Again, the June sell-off is attributed to the weakness in the Indian currency as the rising cost of hedging a volatile rupee hurts the yield differential that FIIs work with.

Class 12 Student launches Backit, one click website/database backup and solution

If yours is a web based business, you need to plan for a good backup/recovery service. Unlike big businesses with IT teams that can manage different aspects of backup/data safety in-house, startups and SMEs definitely need a third-party solution around backups that work without intervention.

And comes Backit.co, a student startup (by Class 12th student, Pulkit Madan who earlier launched Coffee.io, a collaboration tool for geeks.

Backit helps individual/SMBs backup their website/database -(currently supports website (FTP/SFTP) & databases). Backit’s automatic system scans each website/database every 15 minutes and make sure to backup any change made so that the user doesn’t need to.

Another major function of Backit is “Migration“. “We have alway’s wondered if there was a easy way to migrate our website than to download all the content and re-upload it ? With Backit , we have tried to solve the problem of migration and made it possible for anyone to migrate his website/database in just a click”, mentions Pulkit.

What about data safety? All the information and website or database backups are encrypted using Backit’s 2048-bit RSA public key ensuring that only officially authorized Backit.co servers can read your data. Also, Backit saves all encrypted data in isolated servers so to make it super-safe.

Of course, there are several backup solutions available in the market today (read : BlogVault and the art of bootstrapping), but Backit needs to start looking at providing CMS based solutions (Pulkit mentions that WordPress backup is the next in queue).

If you are a webmaster who is looking for an automatic backup solution, do give Backit a spin.

Smartprix -A Start up where we can compare Mobiles,Books,Tabs online

Smartprix empowers cell phone buyers with information for deciding on product and e-commerce site to shop.

Smartprix.com offers shoppers the ability to view and compare mobile phones and their respective pricing information on different online stores, thereby enabling users to ultimately find the right product from the right store at the best price.
“We really wanted to do something beyond pursuing academics something that would benefit people directly. One of our friends was struggling to get appropriate information which will help him decide the cell phone to buy and where to buy it from. At that point, we came up with the idea of Smartprix.com, says Hitesh Khandelwal, co-founder, Smartprix.com.

Abhinav Choudhary, co-founder, Smartprix.com adds, “We wanted to create a one stop site where people would come for their shopping needs, and we would pamper them with detailed comparisons for getting a smart and cheap buy. Consumers and specifically Indians have the habit of doing extensive comparisons until they get the best price and the best deal and this is the sentiment we wanted to address.”

Both hail from Rajasthan and are 21 year old. They founded Smartprix.com in December 2011.
Hitesh likes video games, movies, music and adventures. While Abhinav enjoys listening to music, reading and watching movies in his free time. For both of them their biggest achievement so far is cracking the IIT JEE exams.
Currently the duo is operating the start up all by themselves and there is not much investment except the basic server cost.

“We divide our work according to our interests. Generally either one of us will do the all of interesting work in a project and we will divide the boring work 50-50. Till now, most of the back-end development is done by me, while most of the front-end development is done by Abhinav, “Hitesh Khandelwal.
Some investors have contacted them and they will take funding when the time is right. Their major competitors are naaptol.com, compareindia.in.com, junglee.com etc.

They will continue building Smartprix.com along with their studies and decide their future course next year.
For those who wish to follow their footsteps Hitesh says, “Make something you would like to use. There are a lot of people who would like the same thing, now you just got to find them.” Whereas Abhinav advises “Just follow your skills and never give up!”

Finahub Internet Services LLP, a Kochi-based SaaS startup that offers a customer management platform for retail brokers, is betting big on multi-million retail investors in India for the success of its web-based solution.

Set up in early 2012 by engineering graduates Rajesh S and Ajith K George, the company offers a ‘Kinship Platform’ that enables retail brokers to manage all customer-interfacing activities using a single platform. This ensures better customer engagement and higher operational efficiency by automating processes such as report sending and customer ticket tracking. Finahub clients will also have a better understanding of their customers by leveraging all customer-interaction data available on the platform. The platform can be easily integrated with existing websites and no technical team will be required to build and manage it.

Currently a three-member team, Finahub is also looking to expand to Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi in the next 12 months.

Here is an Intresting thing why the duo turned entrepreneurs in the first place?

Rajesh and George invested in the stock market a few years ago, expecting huge returns. However, the Sensex crashed and they lost their money like many others. But at that time, they realized if people would team up and invest together, it could produce better yields rather than doing it alone. The duo knew that the information processes, required for full understanding of investment risks, far exceeded the capabilities of an individual and crowd sourcing knowledge could be ideal in such cases. So they came up with a public social network exclusively for Indian investors, but it did not work out as expected. Rajesh and George then pivoted and developed a customer management platform for retail brokers.

The company recently hit the headlines when Kochi-based incubator Startup Village listed it as one of the top 10 startups to watch in 2013
